Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed dal (you can use a combination of dals such as red lentils, green lentils, yellow lentils, split chickpeas, split peas, etc.)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Rinse the mixed dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. This step is optional but helps to reduce cooking time.
  2. Cooking the dal: In a pressure cooker or a pot, add the soaked dal along with fresh water. The water level should be about 2 inches above the dal. Pressure cook for about 4-5 whistles or cook on the stovetop until the dal is soft and mushy. If cooking on the stovetop, it may take around 30-40 minutes.
  3. Tempering: In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Adding aromatics and spices: Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chili to the pan. Sauté for a couple of minutes until fragrant. Then add chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy.
  5. Spice it up: Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder to the pan. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the spices are aromatic.
  6. Combining everything: Once the dal is cooked, add it to the pan with the cooked onion-tomato mixture. Mix well and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally. Add water if the mixture seems too thick.
  7. Adjust seasoning: Add salt to taste and adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if needed. Let it simmer for a few more minutes.
  8. Garnish and serve: Garnish the mixed dal with fresh cilantro leaves. Serve hot with rice or roti.

Enjoy your flavorful mixed dal!
