How to Cook North Indian Home Style Jeera Rice

North Indian Jeera Rice, also known as Cumin Rice, is a fragrant and flavorful rice dish seasoned with cumin seeds. Here’s how you can prepare it at home:

A simple and quick rice dish flavored with cumin seeds (jeera) and garnished with chopped coriander leaves. It pairs well with curries and dal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
  • Rinse the basmati rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 20-30 minutes. This helps in achieving long, separate grains when cooked.
  1. Cooking:
  • In a heavy-bottomed saucepan or a rice cooker, heat ghee or oil over medium heat.
  • Once the ghee/oil is hot, add cumin seeds, cardamom pods, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté for about a minute until the cumin seeds start to splutter and become aromatic.
  • Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Stir gently to coat the rice with the flavored oil and spices.
  • Add water and salt to the pan and stir gently. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
  • After 15-20 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for another 5 minutes. This helps the rice to steam and fluff up.
  • After resting, remove the lid and gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains.
  1. Serving:
  • Transfer the Jeera Rice to a serving dish.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves if desired.
  1. Optional Enhancements:
  • You can add a squeeze of lemon juice or sprinkle some chopped cilantro (coriander leaves) over the rice for added flavor.
  • Some people also like to add a pinch of saffron soaked in warm milk to the rice for a richer flavor and color.

Serve your North Indian Jeera Rice hot with your favorite curry or dal dish. Enjoy!
