How to Cook North Indian Home Style Poha

Poha is a popular and easy-to-make breakfast or snack in North India. Here’s a simple recipe for cooking Poha in a home-style North Indian way:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flattened rice (poha)
  • 1 large potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/4 cup peanuts
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse and Soak Poha:
  • Rinse the flattened rice (poha) under cold water in a colander or sieve until it becomes soft. Be gentle as poha can break easily.
  • Let the rinsed poha sit in the colander to drain excess water and soften further. Set aside.
  1. Prepare Ingredients:
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
  • Add peanuts and fry until they turn golden brown.
  1. Add Vegetables:
  • Add diced potatoes to the pan and sauté for a few minutes until they start to soften.
  • Add chopped onions, green chilies, and green peas. Mix well.
  1. Seasoning:
  • Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt over the vegetables. Mix everything together.
  1. Cook Poha:
  • Add the soaked and drained poha to the pan.
  • Gently mix everything together until the poha is well combined with the vegetables and spices.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld together and the poha is heated through.
  1. Garnish and Serve:
  • Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot Poha with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the poha, if desired.

Enjoy your delicious and comforting North Indian home-style Poha for breakfast or as a snack any time of the day!
