How to Cook North Indian Home-Style Palak Dal

Palak Dal, or Dal Palak, is a nutritious and flavorful North Indian dish made with lentils and spinach. Here’s a step-by-step guide to cooking North Indian home-style Palak Dal:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow split moong dal (lentils)
  • 3 cups water
  • 4 cups fresh spinach (palak), washed and chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse and Soak:
  • Rinse the moong dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  • Soak the dal in water for at least 30 minutes. This step is optional but can help in reducing cooking time.
  1. Cook the Dal:
  • In a large pot, add the soaked moong dal and 3 cups of water.
  • Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to simmer.
  • Cook until the dal is soft and mushy. This may take about 20-25 minutes.
  1. Add Spinach:
  • Add chopped spinach to the cooked dal. Stir well and let it simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes until the spinach wilts.
  1. Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):
  • In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat.
  • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  1. Add Aromatics:
  • Add finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  1. Add Ginger-Garlic Paste:
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  1. Add Tomatoes:
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts separating.
  1. Spices:
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  1. Combine with Dal:
  • Transfer the cooked dal and spinach mixture to the pan with the tempering. Mix everything well.
  1. Simmer:
    • Let the Palak Dal simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
  2. Garnish:
    • Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  3. Optional:
    • Squeeze lemon juice into the dal for a tangy flavor (optional).
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the North Indian Palak Dal hot with rice or Indian bread (roti, naan).

This home-style Palak Dal is not only delicious but also packed with the goodness of spinach and lentils. Adjust the spice levels and consistency according to your taste preferences. Enjoy your nutritious Palak Dal!
